Ivan and his brother lived in the house of their father, the blacksmith, in a village in the shadow of the great, dark forest. The people of the village were poor, but in the summertime they were mostly happy, so that the pale, warm air rang with their laughter and their singing as they worked. But as the short summers gave way to autumn, their songs became sad songs and their laughter thin. For they knew that far away to the north, Starjik was greasing the runners of his sled and rounding up his wolves. Starjik! Whisper his name and it was winter in your heart. Hissing over crisp snow in the black of night came Starjik behind his hungry team.

R - Who were the villagers scared of?

I - Why do you think the people were happier in the summertime?

C - What does the author mean when he says their laughter became thin?

LC: To understand the key ideas of a paragraph.

Yesterday, we took a look at different paragraphs of a piece of text and identified what each paragraph was about. We will continue to practice this skill again today.

Whole Class

Let's take a read of the paragraphs below about Howler monkeys and decide what each paragraphs key idea is.

1) When a baby black howler is born, it has golden brown fur so that it can camouflage itself in its mother’s fur. If the baby is female, it will keep its golden fur. However, If the baby is male, the fur will blacken when the monkey is around three years old. Howler monkeys live in family groups of between 15 and 20 members.

What is the key idea of this paragraph?

2) Howler monkeys live up to their name because of their amazing howling calls. Howler monkeys have beards and long, thick hair. They tend to howl at the beginning and end of the day. They have a special voice box and pouch inside their throat, which amplifies (makes louder) their calls.

What is the key idea of this paragraph?
