The Lancashire rose
🏡 How People Lived in 17th Century Lancashire
A long time ago, in the 1600s, Lancashire was very different from today!
👨🌾 Most People Were Farmers
People lived in the countryside and worked on farms. They grew food like wheat, barley, and vegetables, and kept animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens.
🏠 Houses Were Made of Wood and Stone
Houses were small and had thatched roofs (made of straw). They were often cold and smoky because there were no chimneys at first!
🕯️ No Electricity!
There were no lights or TVs. People used candles for light and cooked on a fireplace.
👗 Clothes Were Homemade
People wore clothes made from wool and linen. Boys wore short trousers and shirts. Girls wore dresses and aprons.
🛍️ Markets Were Important
There were no supermarkets! People went to the market in town to buy and sell things like food, cloth, and tools.
📚 Not Many Went to School
Only some children went to school. Most children helped their families with chores like collecting water, feeding animals, or working in the fields.
🏰 The English Civil War
In the middle of the 1600s, there was a big fight called the English Civil War. It made life hard for many families in Lancashire.

LC: To understand the key ideas of a paragraph.
Let's take a look at what a paragraph is. You have recently used paragraphs in your narrative writing when you wrote about your warrior queen going to war against another tribe.
Can you remember what a paragraph is? Tell your talk partner.
-
All the sentences within a paragraph should be about the same person, place, time or topic.
-
When the person, place, time or topic changes, you should start a new paragraph.
-
Every new paragraph should start on a new line.

Read the information on seahorses
The ocean can be a perilous place for little creatures. In fact, most fish don’t make it to adulthood because they are eaten by larger creatures. Predators such as sharks and sea snakes like nothing more than feasting on small fish.
If you are small and live in the ocean, it is important to have a survival strategy. Many small fish gather in large shoals for protection. Some enterprising fish simply make friends with a bigger fish, offering cleaning services in exchange for protection.
Seahorses are small fish that use disguise and camouflage to avoid being detected. Just like land-living chameleons, they can quickly change colour (and sometimes texture) to ‘disappear’ from sight by blending in with their background. It is possible to stare at a sea fan coral for hours without even noticing a pygmy seahorse hidden within.
- Which paragraph is about seahorses using camouflage to hide from predators?
- Which paragraph is about the dangers of being a small fish in the ocean?
- Which paragraph talks about different survival strategies?

Howler Monkeys
Howler monkeys feed mostly on leaves, but will sometimes eat fruit, seeds, flowers, buds and moss. They will occasionally steal birds’ eggs. Because leaves take a very long time to digest, much of each howler monkey’s day is spent resting. This makes howlers one of the most peaceful monkey species.
Howler monkeys have a prehensile (gripping) tail. The monkeys use their tail as a fifth limb to grip branches. Although they are quite large, they are actually quite light, and their tail can easily hold their own weight.
The howler monkey is famous for having one of the loudest calls in the animal kingdom. Howler monkeys usually howl during the mornings and evenings to alert neighbouring troops of their presence.
- Which paragraph is about the grasping tail of a howler monkey?
Paragraph.... is about the grasping tail of a howler monkey.
- Which paragraph is about the diet of a howler monkey?

"I'd like a bar of chocolate please. It's for my mum," said the little girl. She gave the shopkeeper some button, a ring and a toy unicorn in payment. The shopkeeper took the payment and pushed a large bar of chocolate towards the girl.
"Your change," he said as he returned the unicorn to her.
