LC: To recognise different forms of poetry
Tell your talk partner what different types of poems we have been looking at this week.
Can you remember the syllable pattern in a Haiku poem?
Can you remember what is included in a Narrative poem?
Today we will be looking at Rhyming poems.
Click on the picture below to take a look.
You can work out the rhyme scheme of a poem by labelling the words that rhyme with each other. It will help you see the pattern of the poem.
For example, if a poem's first and third lines rhyme you should label those 'A'.
If the second and fourth lines of the poem rhyme, label these 'B'.
Then you can see your four line poem has an 'A B A B' rhyme scheme.
If all four lines rhyme with each other, this is an 'A A A A' rhyme scheme.
The rain falls softly, pitter-pat,
Splashing on windows, oh, how it chitchats!
Dancing on rooftops, it sings a sweet song,
Bringing life to the world, where we all belong.
Puddles are forming, big and round,
Jumping and splashing, oh, how they sound!
Clouds drifting by in shades of grey,
But after the rain comes a bright sunny day.
Can you see what words rhyme?
Is there a pattern?
Let's label the lines together.
Now it's your turn to have a look at the following poem and practice reading it to your partner. Can you hear the rhyming words?
In winter, the snowflakes dance and twirl,
As children laugh and give a whirl.
The trees wear coats of icy white,
And stars peek out to shine so bright.
The chilly air makes breath like steam,
While hot cocoa's warmth is quite a dream.
With scarves wrapped tight, we play and run,
In winter's magic, oh what fun!
The nights are long, the days are short,
In this chilly time, we love to sport.
So gather round, let's sing and cheer,
For winter's joy is finally here!
